GREAT FIRST WEEK

It was awesome seeing all of you again this past week, and I hope that those of you who are new to Makos this season enjoyed the week as much as I did and made some new friends along the way. Matt and I enjoyed woking with such a talented group that we had on Saturday morning. Watching practices and seeing how all of you handled the workouts we are very excited with the possibilities that are possible this season. Matt, Emma and I talked this week as to our planning of practice. We are trying to make sure that we are on the same page to accomodate those of you who may be combining am/pm workouts. Although intervals and yardage may vary a little the general outline will be the same.   WEEK IN REVIEW: The Gold Group and the Senior Prep group spent most of this past week working on the aerobic side of training. Why you ask? All of you have been out of the water for 6 or more weeks so we are no where near the same shape that you were in back in August or April. Oh by the way w

WELCOME BACK

Welcome back to all of our returning Senior Prep, Junior Gold, and Junior Blue swimmers. I would also like to extend a great big WELCOME to all the new swimmers in these groups. I am looking forward to seeing all of you this week, and also to getting started on our new journey that will take us to championship season in March. This is the time of year when we have a chance for new beginnings as a student, swimmer, and for myself as your coach. We remember our success from the past, but it is time to store them in our memory chip and to start anew. As a student you have now had a week in school to get adjusted to new classes, new teacher, a new work load, and of course the new time schedule. Your teachers have planned your year and have gone over what is expected of you, and you have now had some time to soak it in and figure out what you need to do in order to be successful as a student. Some words of wisdom, keep up with all the assignments and projects that you have. Pleas

THE LAST NIGHT

Our teammates have arrived back home after a long week at the showcase classic in Clearwater. We celebrated last night (parents, swimmers and coaches) with our pizza dinner on the beach and yes our annual ice cream afterwards. Beth and I have a lot of thoughts and stories from the week and will post them later this week. Unfortunately this year we really had little time between sessions to keep you up to date and all I could do is put it on paper each day. However I wanted to share some pictures as we watch the sun set on our last day.       Posted with Blogsy

JUNIOR NATIONAL CUP AND WORKOUTS

Hope all of you are enjoying your spring break with family and friends. Our group arrived back from Clearwater on SSunday afternoon after a successful Junior National Cup meet. Getting back to you on Katie and her first race in a long course pool. We need to start with warm ups, because her first comment after a few minutes was "I thought it was never going to end". She however finished the warm up and was ready for her race, and she did great and no she did not do that flip in the middle of the pool. I guess being her first long course swim she went a best time. The last individual swim for Mako was Lexi in that much anticipated 200 fly long course. Before talking to Lexi about strategy I thought I would seek some advice from Peter because at this point of the meet I figured she needed all the help she could get. After talking to Peter the strategy we had for her was to swim a perfect and controlled 150 fly and if she felt good at that point than go for it, and if not

MAKO INVITE. SPRING BREAK

Almost at the end of champioship season. This past weekend you all were fantastic as each of you worked through the weekend. We had a lot of swimmers from our groups who swim their lifetime best in a lot of events. I was so proud of all of you that I saw on Saturday and as I looked at the results on Sunday we had a great meet. Some of our teammates at the bottom of their age groups achieved cuts for next year (if they remain the same), which puts them in a great position going into next season. Our work in and around the walls has improved tremendously this past season. All your hard work really shined during the meet. All the little things that we have talked about all year stood out during the races. One of the biggest things that I enjoyed was watching you all FINISH your races form 5 yards out. You finally seem to understand that you can't just swim to the wall, you need to put the head down and finish. Sorry I could not see some of those races on Sunday but somehow I

JUNIOR OLYMPIC WEEKEND

Entering this past weekend we all had high hopes and dreams that we wanted to accomplish. Although the weekend was long it was filled with a lot of peaks and valleys with each one of you working very hard to reach the summit. Back in September we all started out in the valley and worked hard throughout the season in order to reach for the stars and reach our dreams and goals for the year. Looking over the results from the weekend I am so proud of the way all of you responded to the challenges that you faced and overcame. Yes, there were some disappointments, and without making excuses, I will point out later how to view some of those races. Including relays WE had 272 splashes (a Mako record!) at the meet, and those splashes resulted in 194 personal best times. Makos had another 40 splashes in the 3 nights of finals that resulted in another 27 lifetime bests, and another 10 held their times from the morning session after dropping a lot already. When looking over the times, I als

CHAMPIONSHIP TIME

CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON is now fully upon us. This weekend we will have 2 swimmers (Katie Karlinchek and Emma Lowell) participating in JR/SR Champs at George Mason. Good luck to both of you and start us out on the right path. Next week we will take our 14 and unders over to the UMD pool for JO's. OUR CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM   As soon as they get the information to us regarding time-lines,and warm-ups I will get it posted. TAPER or no Taper You may think I have been ignoring some of you when you have asked that BIG QUESTION,Are we going to taper now? First off a true taper can be different for each swimmer and with that being said the Jr.Gold and Blue group do not need to taper. The reasons are  that we really do not do enough yardage and your muscles have not developed enough where a Taper needs to be done. As for the senior prep group a very small taper is all that is needed. Now keeping that in mind what taper we are going to do has all ready started, by incorporatin

THE SCOOTER

Back to the city for the last day and a half. Today I rented a scooter for 100.000.00 dong. Sound like a lot guys right. Well it actually was only $5.00 US dollars. At first the guy didn't want to do it as he wanted me to ride on the back with him for a tour. Told him me to big we don't both fit and I showed him my license which still allows me to operate motorcycle so after a little negotiation he allowed me to go . Two things when doing this first stay away from the circles as they can be hazardous to ones health. The second which may be more important when you have a flight the next day is to carry a card with the hotel name on it to show people so they can guide you back. I have never been so lost in my life, and those things don't have GPS.       There is no right of way, but I have not seen an accident yet A little snake that crossed my path   One thing not different are kids Interesting fact average income for people is 6-8 dollars a day. The people with t

DON'T BE ONE AND DONE

As we get ready to swim this weekend don't forget to prepare the night before. Pack two of everything, plan a good night rest and a good breakfast. Make sure you arrive early to get checked in and get a good warm up. Don't forget that second warmup 15-20 minutes before you swim. Get a good breakfast, stay hydrated and keep warm ups on to protect your muscles. Don't forget our "two minute rule" if you have a bad swim you have two minutes to be upset and than we need to move on through the meet. Don't be the "one and done" swimmer who lets one swim determine the whole weekend. The same works in reverse if you have a great swim (and you will) be excited for two minutes and move on if you have more events. HAKUNA MATATA GUYS Starting next Tuesday I would like to see Jr./Sr. Champ and JO swimmers to wear tights or double suits and continue for the next couple of weeks as we move closer to our next phase for this year The last two days I have sp
